Overview of FSSAI State License
FSSAI State License is a license of food-related business such as small and medium-sized manufacturer, distributor, retailer, marketers and so. Obtaining the State FSSAI License is mandatory for the above-mentioned food business operators. The state government is responsible for granting the FSSAI license to them.
The food business operator or FBO should have the business only in one state to get this license. This license is provided to all the food units whose annual turnover is between 12 Lakhs to INR 20 Lakhs and it should be traded within India. The validity of this license is for five years’ incumbency period is a minimum of 1 year.
FSSAI License
FSSAI is the short form of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, and it is responsible for providing food licenses to food products and to the food business owners. Fssai License is essential for all types of food business operators such as food product manufacturers, food traders, and food store operators to receive the license of FSSAI. It is the apex body which was incorporated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Government of India is answerable for preparing and launching the standards for selling, storing and packing of food items in India. Additionally, this license works as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Moreover, there are two types of food licenses according to the size or scale of the business, they are FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License. And FSSAI License is again divided into two parts.
Types of Food Safety License
All types of food-related businesses must apply for a food license. And the type of Food License which you need to get depends on the various factors like turnover of the food business, the scale of the food business and the kind of operations or activities you are indulged in. Basically, there are two types of FSSAI License or Food Safety license or food License. One is the FSSAI License, and the other is the FSSAI Registration. But, how do you determine, which one of them is right for you?

Eligibility for State FSSAI License
- The dairy business that processes more than 50000 litres of milk every day or more than 2500 MT of solid milk products annually
- Food business units engaged in the process or production of vegetable oil exceeding a minimum of 2 MT every day
- Slaughtering or butchering units
- A food business that works on meat processing and its capacity exceeding daily 500 Kg or 150 MT yearly
- The processing unit pursued in wholesale food business having an annual turnover of more than INR 30 Crore.
- Food business operating in retail or distribution of food products with a turnover of more than INR 20 Crore
- Hotels and Restaurants
- The food business units working on processing plants such as re-labellers, re-packers and producing unit up to a minimum of 2 MT daily.
The government Fee structure for State FSSAI License
Fees amount of Rs. 5000 is applicable for:
- Production of 10000 to 50000 for milk units
- Production of 1 Metric Ton or more
- Production of 500 metric ton to 2500 metric ton of Milk unit in a year
Fees of Rs.3000 is applicable for:
- Production of less than 1 Metric Ton
- Production of milk ranging between 500 to 10000
- Production of milk of ranging from 2.5 metric ton to 500 metric ton yearly
For 4 stars hotels and below the amount of the fee is around Rs. 5000 :
- A common fee of Rs. 2000 is applicable to every food-related business or food service provider which includes hotels, canteens, restaurants, clubs and so on.
Documents Required
- Name and contact information of directors of the business
- Duly filled and signed form
- Map or Blueprint of the layout of the location in which the business is operated
- Details of all the equipment and machinery set up and operating in the food processing unit.
- Details of food category which are manufactured
- Address proof & Id proof of proprietor granted by the government
- Passport size photographs of the directors
- List of the food which is manufactured
- Letter of authorization admitting the name & address of the director
- Address proof of business place such as electricity bill or copy of registry in case of owned business place
- If the premise is hired or rented, rent agreement and NOC from the owner is required
- No objection certificate or License copy from the manufacturer
- Plan certificate relating to the food safety management system
Procedure to obtain State FSSAI License
Below is the simplified steps followed to obtain State FSSAI License:
- Submission of Form A to food and safety department along with all complete documents.
- The concerned department approves or rejects the proposed application within a week or seven days from the acknowledgement of an application
- After approval, the food and safety department will grant a registration certificate.
- The concerned department will also issue a registration number with the applicant photo.
- It is mandatory for all Food Business Operators to display the Food license certificate of registration at the food business unit premises during the business hours.
