Overview of Central FSSAI License
Food-related businesses or Food Business Operators who are involved in business activities such as manufacturing, distribution, storage, trading and retailing food products should obtain Central Food License. As per the nature of food business operations and activities, the FSSAI License is granted either as a central license or a state license.

FSSAI is the short form of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, and it is responsible for providing food licenses to food products and to the food business owners. Fssai License is essential for all types of food business operators such as food product manufacturers, food traders, and food store operators to receive the license of FSSAI. It is the apex body which was incorporated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Government of India is answerable for preparing and launching the standards for selling, storing and packing of food items in India. Additionally, this license works as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Moreover, there are two types of food licenses according to the size or scale of the business, they are FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License. And FSSAI License is again divided into two parts.
Types of Food Safety License
All types of food-related businesses must apply for a food license. And the type of Food License which you need to get depends on the various factors like turnover of the food business, the scale of the food business and the kind of operations or activities you are indulged in. Basically, there are two types of FSSAI License or Food Safety license or food License. One is the FSSAI License, and the other is the FSSAI Registration. But, how do you determine, which one of them is right for you?

The different license for different FBOs is completely based on the scale of operation of the business.
Eligibility and criteria of FSSAI Central License
- Dairy product producing units of 50000 litres or 2500 megaton solid milk products yearly
- Processing Units that make about 2MT of vegetable oil per day
- Slaughter or butchering unit with the capacity of:
- 50 large animals per day
- 150 small animals per day
- 1000 poultry birds per days
- The processing unit of meat ranging from 50 KG or 150 megatons per day
- Food processing unit with a capacity of 2 megatons daily
- Export-oriented units
- Processing Units which as a cold storage or refrigerator facility with 10000 megatons or more of
- Wholesalers engaged in the food business with storage capacity and having yearly turnover of more than Rs. 30 Crore.
- Retailers and distributor involved in the food business with the yearly turnover of more than 20 Crore.
- A food business involved in the activities of catering, food marketing, food serving in restaurants and so on with yearly turnover of Rs.20 Crore or more.
Documents required for obtaining Central FSSAI License
- Duly completed and signed form B as per FSSAI rules and regulations
- Blueprint of the layout of the registered place of the food-related manufacturing and operational unit.
- If the applicant is forming a co-operative society, then a detailed list of all the members that includes name, address, contact information, etc. is mandatory for submission.
- A complete list of directors of the business such as name, address, contact information with a copy of MOA, AOA & COI is mandatory.
- If the applicant is forming a partnership firm, then a detailed list of all the partners of the business such as name, address, contact information, etc. with all needed copies of a partnership deed is mandatory.
- If the applicant is forming a registered trust, then a copy of trust deed and complete details of trustees is needed
- Address proof of business place or premise is needed, such as Electricity bill, Registry of the premise, Rent agreement, etc.
- Food safety management system or plan in place
- Source of raw materials, milk and other food items along with its place.
- NOC or No Objection Certificate by the local authorities or municipality.
- If the applicant operates a hotel and the central license is received for the same, tourism certificate granted by the ministry of tourism and it is compulsorily affiliated.
On receiving the application, the authority examines and scrutinizes the renewal application. After completing the investigation and on being assured about the authenticity of documents and information provided the authority issues renewed Central FSSAI License.
Renewal of Central FSSAI License
If the granted Food Central license is getting expired, then food business operators need to renew the license. According to the eligibility, the applicant should submit duly signed and completed Form A or Form B along with all necessary documents for the renewal process such as:
- Self-declaration authenticated by an applicant
- Passport size photographs of the applicant
- Aadhar card and PAN card of the applicant
- Voter Id or driving license for Identity proof
- The authority examines and scrutinizes the application and all the documents submitted for the renewal process.
- After completing the proper investigation and authenticity of documents, the concerned authority grants the renewed Central FSSAI License to the applicant.
